The documentary on how a young pilot gets his or her wings is now in the editing process. A few more days of filming and the last bits of the film will be ready to be edited.

The last day of filming will be in March ( still awaiting the exact date ) but that is when the present batch of student pilots ( PUPES ) get their wings from the Chief of the Air Force Lt.Genl. Carlo Gagiano.

Black Eagle Projects is also very proud and privileged to announce that Autopilot will be the band of choice to supply the music for parts of the documentary. Alasdair has put together a little taster for you and we have put it on Youtube.

The film covers all aspects of what a student goes through to become a Military Aviator. From the time they arrive at Air Force Base Langebaanweg, till the time they receive their wings. This is a detailed documentary with a very up close and personal feel. From the briefing room to the social aspects and traditions to the cockpit. The filming is not 100% complete as we are still busy getting the last of the flying sequences and we will be ready for the wings parade in March and launch the film in April.

The film will be launched at a venue that is agreed on by the Air Force and we are looking forward to getting their support with this. To date we have received nothing but wonderful co-operation and assistance in making this a great documentary. It has been a year in the making and the South African Air Force( SAAF) and our whole country can be very proud of the instructors and team at Langebaanweg AFB. This group of men and women led by Colonel Minnie are so dedicated to their work, it is a task that they love, it is very clear to see the passion they have. Military aviators are a very special group of people. Having had the privilege to be around them and to film them while at work has been a very special time for me. It is something I will treasure for the rest of my life. However even they will be the first to admit that in the background are a group of men and women who keep them flying, the mechanics the avion’s the ground crews and all of the support personnel who are dedicated to the Air Force and country.

The Officer commanding of the flying school LT.Col. Jan Van Zyl has been pro active and supportive of our film from the start, recently they had their 60th anniversary of the flying school and he made sure I was in the correct place at the correct time to get the best footage possible. Soon I will be doing the last of the aerial filming and then it is just a matter of a interview or two and the final filming will take place at the wings parade in March.

I am looking forward to finishing this documentary, it will be a highlight to all aviators who have passed through a military establishment to attain their freedom from the earth. This is not however aimed exclusively at them, it is aimed at all people interested in aviation around the world. The standard of aviation instruction and instructor training in the SAAF is up there with the highest in the world, we can be very proud as a nation of these men and women in the SAAF. Black Eagle Projects thanks you all for your input and co-operation and we look forward to doing many projects in the future. At a later date I shall name the special individuals who have made this a reality but for now I would like to make a special mention of Lt Patrick Paulse who has helped us to get where we are today and Captain Nico Frylinck a family man and a military aviator and instructor pilot we can all be proud of.

Go and have a look at the promo on Youtube and please rate it and press stars .

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DJHz7kLgh6I

http://www.ictel.co.za/8702

100 Years of Helicopter flight

<span style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0);

Aviation enthusiasts will know that 2007 marks the hundredth anniversary of helicopter flight. As part of my research for the two documentary’s on helicopters that I am busy with ( The Huey and the Allouette 111 ) I went to Paris to take a series of aviation pictures and took quite a lot of footage for the documentary film aswell.

In 1907 a young 24 year old French man from Liseiux, Paul Cornu took a twin propeller aircraft into the air. History tells us that the aircraft lifted its pilot off the ground for about 20 seconds on 13 November 1907, and that other short flights followed. So what you say, the Wright brothers had done this very successfully …..years before, well the difference was that Cornu’s machine went straight up, Little did Cornu know the effect that his machine would have on the world.
At the age of 24, produced an initial working model of a helicopter. The aircraft weighed 13 kg and had two “rotors”, placed on either side of a metal frame where a tiny engine, generating just two horsepower, was positioned. This model made several leaps into the air before numerous onlookers, which convinced Cornu that he was on the right track. He then set out to construct a large-scale aircraft, financed by public donations. Cornu began building his aircraft at the end of 1906. He worked alone and progress was slow. The helicopter that he finished in the summer of 1907 consisted of a V-shaped frame which supported the 24 (theoretical) horsepower Antoinette engine and the pilot. The transmission was provided by a large 22-meter belt linking the engine to two big pulleys on either side of the structure that supported twin-blade propellers. Inclinable planes for steering were installed just beneath the propellers.

In the initial tests, Cornu encountered the same problems he had already found with his working model, insufficient power from the engine for the 260 kg load, a lack of transmission belt adhesion and inappropriate propeller sections. History tells us that the aircraft lifted its pilot off the ground for about 20 seconds on 13 November 1907, and that other short flights followed. If certain engineers and historians are today dubious about the actual capabilities of Paul Cornu’s machine, the fact remains that his resolute and ingenious work makes Paul Cornu the first person to successfully take a helicopter into the air.

The reason that I have blogged this is because I am making two documentary’s on Helicopters. One being on the Huey that amazing craft that conjures up visions of Vietnam and gunships, evacuations and all sorts of war memories. The other is on the Allouette 111 helicopter and its predecessors. These will form part of the Black Eagle Projects Aviation series and we are busy in pre production but have already got some incredible footage of the Huey and the Allouette.

I went to Paris to photograph the Helicopter museum. The special ladies Veronique and Virginie took me out there and we had a very interesting morning, I can recommend to anyone who is an aviation enthusiast to get to Le Bourget museum it is very close to the centre of Paris and is easy to get too.

Black Eagle Projects has decided to improve and expand our customer relationships and with the Allouette documentary, we are going to have an English and a French soundtrack.

www.blackeagleprojects.co.uk

I am in the process of creating a series of documentary films on Aviation. All will be in the Black Eagle Projects stable and we will call it the aviation series. It is a step away from wildlife documentary filmmaking I know but I will get back to the bush again soon. As I am starting the pre production on five new wildlife documentary films The first seven will be documentaries on different aviation subjects. So far two are complete, being the Avro Shackleton 1722 and Airshow.( In SA they spell Air Show Airshow as one word) The series will be finished in April 2008,and will be available on DVD’s( documentary DVD’s ).The individual documentary DVD’s will be available as soon as they are finished. Documentary filmmaking takes time and precision, especially the documentary film with technical aspects in it. Aviation is a very popular subject with many thousands of knowledgeable enthusiasts on general aviation. So it is vital to make sure that our documentary film production is 100% correct. During the making of the Avro Shackleton 1722 documentary film we had the best advisors on historical aviation available to us in he form of Henry James Potgieter, Buks and Pat not forgetting <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 />Chris Teale the museologist.

<?xml:namespace prefix = o />

Aviation photography is a very popular past time and there are many good aviation photographers out there creating really outstanding aviation images. There are also many amateur or weekend documentary video makers who create very good aviation pictures, and independent documentary aviation makers who cover all aviation art, and air force aspects of general aviation.

So to fulfill one of my dreams of making some really good aviation documentary video films I started with the Avro Shackleton 1722 film then completed the Airshow documentary DVD, these are now available to order. The new innovation that we have started is that there is stock in England and all orders from England and Europe are posted from England. The Black Eagle projects Website is up and running in England and the one in South Africa will be open in January. The next on the list is the Huey Helicopter the Dakota c-47 DC3 the Harvard and a documentary on how a young military aviator gets his wings, and one surprise that will have you in the cockpit with some unique aviation perspectives.

An aviation picture library where you can purchase aviation pictures will also be available as of January. The first of the aviation series of DVDs Avro Shackleton 1722 is available to order from the website in the UK http://www.blackeagleprojects.co.uk/and in South Africa send an email to http://www.blogger.com/andschofield@gmail.com in the future there will also be aviation gifts for sale.

<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5141467515901497842" style="FLOAT: right;
